On Saturday Jon and I went to the Bennington Free Library Fabric Swap. They have it every year the weekend before Earth Day. I had bagged up some fabric to bring but learned that I was too late to drop if off. (Next year I’ll be ready thought to drop it off the week before.)
I was looking to exchange fabric, giving away some that I’d had for years and knew I wasn’t going to use. But now that I wasn’t giving away any fabric, I wan’t really looking get any more. My shelves are full.
We went anyway, thinking maybe I’d find some batting or filling for my pillows. But there wasn’t any, and as I looked at the fabric on the tables, I didn’t see anything I could use.
Until halfway half way through the room the golden yellow velvet caught my eye.
Suddenly I was no longer looking for batting or stuffing, but solid textured fabric for the bottoms of my Holding Pillows.
The more I looked the more I found. I got a nice stack of solid colors and a few other older pieces of fabric along with some long thin strips with leaf and flower prints.

Today it was easy to choose the soft teal velvet that inspired my Holding Pillow. In the fabrics I chose to go with it were the promise of spring. That’s how I decided to stitch the small sprouting plant with lots of sun for the image in the circle.

On the back is another piece of fabric I got at the fabric swap…

Maria, your holding pillows are just wonderful. Each one a story on it’s own, such a joy. This one struck a real cord with my heart. The colors, the butterflies and flowers and of course the sprout! All things a part of this stage of my journey. Fabric swaps are the perfect treasure hunt and so much fun! Looks like you scored nicely. Any chance you have some of those fabrics left to create something similar? I would love to have one! What a work of art.
Thinking of you on the passing of White Hen too. She was truly special, so glad she had you in her life, and her in yours as well.
Take care,
Cheryl
Thank you Cheryl for your good words about White Hen and my Holding Pillows. I will be happy to make a pillow with similar to “Sprout” for you. I’m backed up about three weeks, but will get to it. I will email you about it too. Thanks for asking.
That’s awesome, Maria! Please, no worries about how long it takes. It’s been a good long day out in the garden, I’ll look for your email. Take care.
Sounds like a great day Cheryl. :)
