Notes From The Woods. Looking For Skunk Cabbage

Skunk Cabbage in the swamp

Last years leaves, translucent with rain,  glow like fairy lights decorating the young beech trees. The ground is papered with oak leaves and spotted with red buds from the maples.

One big beech tree fell across the path up the hill.  It’s more woods than path now and I have to pay close attention to find it.

The first bright orange Salamander surprised me. I thought it too early, not warm enough.   There are so many I watch where I step.

The rain has unearthed the crystals that pop up every spring like wildflowers.  I pick up a crystal as well as a crushed beer can.

I stop to look around me.  I see the white mushrooms cantilevered from the dead tree.   Someone buzzes close to my ear, it bumps into my eye then is gone.

The insects are back.

  1. Your picture reminded me of, when I was a little kid, we used to go to the Catskills. There, I trapped a salamander and put it in a bottle. Then, we brought it back to Brooklyn. But it didn’t live too long.
