Jon and I sit under the apple tree looking out at the Green Mountains. The horizon is far enough away to let my eyes soften and rest.
The birds surrounding us, talking back and forth to each other, is music. They are a moving part of the landscape.
I lift my head in the direction of the farmers field on the other side of the tree line. “Look,” I say to Jon, “the deer are back. ”
They are small in the distance. A long oval with thin legs, an arched neck and a head that reaches down to the ground or up to the sky. Far away, but still close enough to see the white of their tails as they lift them in warning and run.
A whole night came between my sewing the strips of fabric together for this Holding Pillow and my seeing, in my mind, the grazing deer in the small circle.
I was meditating when it came to me.
There’s something about those soft peachy pinks in the shell of the acorn, also reflected in the thinnest strip of fabric in the pillow, that says “deer” to me.
I got the piece of green patterned oak leaves, to the left of the acorn fabric at the Fabric Swap last weekend. I have another one like it in gold. It was that and the acorn fabric that got this Holding Pillow started.

Thank you for always showing the fabric on the back. It’s funny, I have such anticipation for the back that I sometimes scroll down to see it first, then back up to study the front. It’s always a perfect pairing.
That’s interesting Kim. That backing is quicker to sew on, but not alway to find in my stash. It’s half the pillow after all.:)
