I walked into Canteen Coffee Co, the new cafe in town to get some scones. That’s where I saw Mary, who was having lunch.
“I’m starting to knit with Merricat’s wool.” she said to me.
Then Mary told me how at 78 she is learning to knit for the first time. She bought a skein of Robin’s wool a couple years ago.
Mary joined a knitting circle in town and although she knew she wanted to learn to knit, she also knew that if she had a skein of special wool, she’d actually go through with it.
Her first attempt was to knit a square that would be a potholder. But her stitches were uneven and she got a triangle instead.
One of the women in the group said she could take out the stitches and start over. This kind of horrified her, since she’d worked so hard on the piece. Another woman, who was a kindergarten teacher, told her she could make another triangle and attached them together to make a cowl.
So that’s what she did.
Now Mary is knitting again, this time with Merricat’s white wool.
Like many of us, Mary has a hard time sitting still without having something to do with her hands. Sometimes she draws or does her nails while watching TV, but now knitting works too.
She said it’s also good for her brain to be learning something new at her age.
I love that my sheep’s yarn was special enough to Mary to help challenge her to learn to knit. She told me she’d post a picture of the cowl she made from Robin’s yarn on Facebook. When she does, I’ll put it up on my blog so you can all see it too.

Wonderful. Go Mary!
:)
That’s a nice story. Mary at age 78 is leaning to knit.
:)
Mary always good to learn something new.
Everyday is a school day,so the saying goes.
Ah, sounds like something a kindergarten teacher would say Loraine. And so true!
