I sit on the couch in the living room, rolling dryer balls, the reassuring hum of the generator outside the window. The power went out sometime last night and we’re still waiting for it to come back on.
The internet was out too, until just a few minutes ago.
I pushed the generator out of the barn, through the snow covered ground, when a storm threatened early in January. It sat, frozen there for months. Until last week when our shearer and friend Ian McRae came for dinner and wheeled it back into the barn.
He wanted to help, to do something for us.
It seemed the perfect chore and of course we joked how now that he moved the generator back to the barn we’d loose power.
We were lucky, even though it was very windy, not even a limb broke off from the dying Paper Birch. We’re fortunate to have a generator too.
We couldn’t get online most of the day, but I could turn on my scale, the only electricity I needed to start rolling my dryer balls and tying them into those long socks. I made enough for the pre-orders and will make more tomorrow. I didn’t want to run the washing machine using the generator, but I’ll wash them tomorrow in hot water and dry them for an hour at least, in a hot dryer.
If all goes well, I should be able to get them in the mail by Thursday.
