I don’t have a name for it yet, my latest quilt is evolving.
Convention told me it needed a solid color around it, but my craving for pattern on pattern is insatiable (It began when I saw a Matisse exhibition at the Guggenheim when I was in high school).
Although once I had the black fabric with pink roses sewed on, I knew I needed to settle it down a bit. Otherwise what was happening in the center would be lost.
One solid color was just too heavy but I saw the big squares before they were there. I don’t know if you can see it in the photo, but the lighter color is a black and white checked gingham.
After I got it all sewed together, I started looking at the other squares I had already pieced together.
This one began with the red framed piece on the top. I made it sometime last year and tucked it away for another day. It just happened to have the same black fabric with pink roses in it.
When I sewed together the scraps to make the little pink house then added the eggs, It worked perfectly beneath the red framed piece.

I was wandering around my fabric, trying this and that with the squares I had when I saw the last of the egg print and a scrap of solid red.
They called to me and I couldn’t resist.

I spent a lot of time moving pieced together squares of fabric around. Above is where I left it for the day. At this point, I think I’ll continue to play with those big solid black and black and white checked squares. But I may feel different tomorrow.
The pink lines and black fabric with roses, are giving the quilt a coherence. I don’t have much of the pink roses left, so I’ll use it sparingly.
It’s curious how something so slight, in comparison to the rest, can be so important.
