I was cleaning off my work table when I came across the piece of fabric with the roosters on it. I put it aside, thinking the last thing we need right now are more roosters.
I thought of the last rooster we had. How he used to keep the hens corralled, never let them wander, and was always pecking at them. Then he started attacking me whenever I walked out of the house. After he clawed my leg I realized I was actually getting nervous about walking around the farm.
That’s when Jon shot the rooster. It was the second time we had to put a rooster down.
I noticed right away how once the rooster was gone the hens wandered the farm. They went wherever they wanted and never had any trouble with predators. Maybe I’m projecting, but they seemed much happier to me.
After that we decided not to have anymore roosters.
But as I was putting the fabric away, I thought of Winston. Winston was a good rooster.
Jon had him at old Bedlam Farm. He was older and lame, injured when he was protecting the hens from a hawk attack.
I didn’t know him very well, but when he was dying our barn cat Minnie slept by his side.
So I took the fabric back to my work table and decided to make Rooster Potholders for all the good roosters out there. The roosters that protect without being domineering.
I know there some, I’ve heard stories about the, even if I haven’t had the opportunity to experience many of them myself.
