I finished tacking Wild Thing today. Now it’s folded up in a box and tomorrow I’ll bring it to the postoffice to send it home.

I fold the quilt as I run a lint brush over it and cut the rogue threads.
Doing this reminds me how important the back of the quilt is. It’s not often something I write about. How I choose the fabrics completely by how they feel.
The color has to be just right. Some quilts want a dark backing, others lighter. A big pattern works for some while others need something smaller. The patterns also have to feed the front of the quilt not fight it.

It is more likely to touch the body, to feel a wall, the back of a couch or a bed beneath it.
The back of the quilt is its grounding, not seen as much as felt.

Maria, this quilt is beautiful! I love your description/inspiration/requirements for the backing, something I often agonize over.
The softness and richness of this quilt are amazing. It is like I can feel it!
Best,
Vikki
Thanks so much Vikki. Seems it was good to write about the backing. Glad I did. :)
Thank you for writing about your quilt backings. I have often wondered how you choose them. It was an “ah-ha” moment when you said the backings were more “likely to touch the body.”
I never put it all into words before Barbara. I just always did it. It was good to write about and I’m glad it had meaning for you.
This one feels different than any others you’ve done. Like it’s from another time. And laid out on the bed, it feels complete, at home and where it should be. I love it.
Thanks Sandy. :)
