I got the sheep in the barn this morning just before the rain came. It only lasted long enough to get Jon wet as he opened the gate for the donkeys to graze.
The sound of me opening the grain pail was enough to get the sheep running to the barn. I gave them just a bit of grain, so it won’t disturb their fasting before shearing.
Fanny and Lulu knew something was up, they stayed away as I closed the gate behind Issachar, the last sheep to come.
After the sheep were closed in the barn, Lulu and Fanny came over to check on things. Issachar and Lulu touched noses though the chicken wire as if reassuring each other.
Then the donkeys followed Jon to the pasture.
The donkeys know what’s about to happen and wonder why the sheep don’t remember from last time – so easily lured into the barn with the promise of grain. Mama Lulu touched noses with King Issachar in sympathy and solidarity before retreating to the safety of the pasture, knowing they would never need to be sheared, such wise donkeys with their earthly wisdom. I’m sure that Kim will be even more beautiful after her wool-cut, and all will feel lighter in the warming weather, yielding sumptuous wool products this winter. Here’s to a successful and peaceful shearing for your sheep, and may the rain be short-lived.
