The Bear In The Woods

nutshell on mossy stump still life

The bear crashed thought the bright green brambles in the place that had been logged, and the sun shone brightly.

We were in the shadow of the woods.   Fate started to run towards the bear but quickly retreated when I called her back.  Zinnia, alway alert seemed, somehow, not to notice.

Or maybe she didn’t want to.

Black on bright green is what I saw.  The arch of the bears back like a breeching whale in a green sea. I watched the brambles shiver and shake as the bear ran through them.  A blur of movement, punctuated by that blackest of black.

The bear wanted nothing to do with us.  And as curious and thrilled as I was to see him, I didn’t really want much more to do with him either.

The bear whet in one direction and we turned around and went in the other.

It’s the second time I’ve seen a bear in these woods.  The first was a few years ago and that bear just looked at us then slowly walked away.

This bear might have been a young one, more cautious and finding his way for the first time.  Not expecting a person and two dogs to cross his path.

Just as we didn’t expect to see him.

    1. I didn’t Sandy. The Bear was far away and I know that black bears will do anything to avoid people, at least when they are in the woods. I think if it were closer, I’d have been scared as well.

  1. This reminds me of the sweet children’s story – Blueberries for Sal… I think I’m remembering that correctly. How exciting for you – glad your paths remained separate
