“The tide goes in and the tide goes out.” I think of that quote (not that I know who to attribute it to) often.
When I finished my black and gold Meditation Mat that I made for Joanne, that’s what I thought. It was the waving ocean fabric, of course, but also the patch of fabric with wheat on it and the black fabric I chose to surround the batik that I bought back from India.
It’s been rainy and windy here today and as I sat meditating on the back porch this morning, I watched the grasses in the marsh and the trees in front of me waving back and forth and round and round in the wind.
They looked more to me like oceans than plants. I see that movement in “Wave.”

The beauty of working with scraps is that they take me to a place I might not have otherwise gone. Because the wave fabric was cut at an angle, I had to add something to it so it would fit where I wanted it to go.
I chose the marble fabric because it seemed to mimic the flow of the waves.
It was only later, when the Meditation Mat was whole that I noticed how that piece of marbleized fabric also mimicked the flower in the batik.

The subconscious at work. When I began this Mediation Mat I was just thinking black and gold as Joanne asked for. But the art of it demanded more.

Yet another absolutely gorgeous piece of art, Maria. You are amazing!
Why thank you Sue. :)
