Hot Days

It’s 8:30pm and still hot out.     I just opened the gate so the sheep and donkeys can graze through the night. The bugs are bad too, tiny gnats who the sheep shake their heads at and donkeys swish with their tails.

Since the apple limb fell the animals water bucket is in the sun for most of the day and on these very hot days the water warms up.   So I put a bucket of water in the pole barn where it stays cool.

The sheep and donkeys drank it down three times today.

The chickens, who often warm themselves on the hot slate on the back porch found the shade of the lilacs instead.

Zip spent most of the day in the barn sleeping in the haystacks.  But this evening he came out into the pasture with the rest of the animals watching Fate run around the sheep. Probably trying to understand whey she’d be doing so much running on such a hot day.

Unlike a lot of people we are fortunate to have air conditioners.    Also the house is surrounded by trees and fields, which helps to keep things cooler than in some places.  We sleep downstairs in this weather.

Our old farm house isn’t well insulated, but I’ve learned to open the windows at night and close them during the day.

  1. I love the last picture. Zip, laid back, observing. And Fate, running towards you full throttle, tongue wagging in the wind. It made me laugh. You managed to capture a split second moment. Perfect.
