The Killdeers usually keep their distance, at least while I’m around. But this morning one was walking around the barn yard and got close enough to the barn that I could see the other animals are used to having them around. (That’s Fanny walking past the Killdeer).
Killdeers in our area migrate, some from was far away as Mexico. They nest on the ground, including in a grazed pasture I’ve never seen one of their nests, but this year I’ve seen and heard a them a lot.
Some of the animals they eat are worms, snails, crayfish, and even frogs. Our farm with the marsh, pond and pastures it the perfect place for them to nest.
In the video, as well as the Killdeer you can hear many of the other birds who live on the farm.
I love the return of the killdeer to our little farm. We have had 2 pair nest on our field for 6 years. I’m not sure if they’re the same ones or perhaps babies who were raised here. The babies are so cute and it has been a privilege to watch them grow. I hope you get to see the babies!
I’ve never seen the babies Josie, but I’ll look for them. How nice that they keep returning to you farm!
