“The Universe In A Butterfly Wing” My Latest Meditation Mat Is Sold

The first time I  remember hearing  the story about Krishna’s mother seeing the Universe in his mouth,  was when I saw the 1993 movie of the book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. 

In the story Krishna is a child and his mother hears he has been eating dirt. When he deny’s it she looks in his mouth.  When she does….  “She sees all the days of yesterday and all the days of tomorrow; she sees all ideas and all emotions, all pity and all hope, and the three strands of matter; not a pebble, candle, creature, village, or galaxy is missing, including herself and every bit of dirt in its truthful place. “

I loved the idea of it even thought I couldn’t make sense of it intellectually.  It was how it made me feel.  That the smallest thing could hold multitudes.   It made me hopeful that maybe there was more to myself  than I knew.

I still don’t really understand the idea to explain it, but now, since meditating in nature,   I experience it.

It happens when I go into the woods and see an inch long spiders silk, strung between two twigs with snow flakes hanging on it as if it were a clothesline, or when I find a flies wing on the ground, sparkling iridescent in the sun,  or a slug feasting on the crumb of a mushroom that some larger animal left.  Seeing these tiny things, somehow make me feel connected to something bigger than even the woods itself.

I may not see the universe, but I feel it, and myself as a part of it.

I didn’t set out to make art about this idea.

But when I finished my latest Meditation Mat and looked at it, it’s the idea I saw.  The Meditation Mat tells that story of my going into nature and finding the infinite in the minute.
