The moon was impressive yesterday morning a day after it was full. A glowing ghost hovering above the tree line. The Sturgeon Moon, last full moon of the summer.
I’ve been seeing the signs of autumn around me, I’m ready for the fall.
This is what I saw….
Turkey vultures migrating
My back porch garden is more seed than flowers and there are more dahlia’s every day.
The first wild aster growing by the pond
The thistle had gone to seed, snowing all over the farm (although I haven’t seen as many goldfinches eating the seeds as I have in past years).
The chickens are molting. Losing their feathers and growing a new coat of the winter. They’ve also stopped laying eggs and are stay in the coop long after I open the door.
The birdsong has dwindled dominated by the calls of bluejays and crows.
It’s dark at 5am
This morning I saw the first flock of Canada Geese flying south over the farm.
Making apple sauce.
I’m curious about the signs of fall in other places around the country or the ones nearby that I’ve missed….
Here in Northwest NJ the golden rod is blooming. There are golden leaves showing up. The cicadas are singing their song. It is in the 50’s at night now. The gardens are losing color and starting to sleep. The hummingbirds have begun leaving on their long migration. The males leave first.
We usually have apples everywhere, but a serious freeze destroyed the blossoms in spring this year. I love Autumn! The colors bring joy!

I’ve noted the wrens have moved on replaced by the fun of seeing nuthatch hopping up and down the locust tree. Plus baby chipmunks eating from the corn I put out. I also note though warm during the day, cooler temps after 5pm, along with the light changing. I love your photos of the moon. Moon always brings me comfort.

So interesting. Do,you not get wrens where you live? They are one of my favorite birds.
We do Barb, but I’m not that familiar with them. I have a friend who lives nearby and one nests on her mailbox.
Someone commented that the ragweed is early meaning early Fall. I don’t know about that but there does seem to be an awful lot of it about. Lots of purple loosestrife as well. I saw you had posted a photo of white snakeroot on your blog I always forget the name of them, but expect them this time of year. https://catsincambridge.net
I’ve never heard that Carolyn, but it’s true there is a lot and the fall does seem close. We have tons of purple loosestrife too.
Only today did I notice the change in the colors. I feel behind again this year.
