I got the fabric when I was in India. It was a pair of pants that were way to big for me. But I loved the fabric, the bright orange with ancient looking symbols.
That was almost ten years ago. So I can’t say what made me pull it from my shelf last week, cut out some of the images and make them into Potholders. Maybe it was that I knew it would work with the fabric already on my work table, mostly the scraps that Kathy sent me.

The ladder and sun were recognizable and images I’ve worked with before. The diamond like something I’ve seen in my Language of the Goddess book and the little square, diamond and circle reminded me of a mandala (“designed to guide the mind from outer chaos towards the calm centre, a reflection of spiritual journeys and universal harmony.“).
A “Beginners Guide to Understanding Indian Art Motifs” led me to look further into Buddhist and Hindu mandalas where I found the meaning of some of the symbols on the fabric….
Diamond… “purity and indestructibility.”
Circle… “the cyclical nature of life and a protected space.”
Square…. “balance and stability.”
Sun/star… a reminder to “seek out your destiny by making a connection with your inner self.”
Ladder as a symbol of reaching for your higher spiritual self.
A bit of spirituality on a Potholder. Maybe they will be a reminder to pause and go inward in the busyness of everyday life.
My Little Mandala Potholders are $25 each + $6 shipping for one or more. You can see them all and buy them in my Etsy Shop. Just click here.
Or you can email me at [email protected]. I take checks, PayPal and Venmo.

There’s your potholder model getting all dressed up on a Friday night; and all of those symbols’ meanings are perfectly applicable to the tree. Namaste tree.
Oh, I love that Amy, it is like a tribute to the maple too.
