Full Moon Fiber Art

Harvest Moon, Yoga, Fire and S’mores

Full moon, yoga, fire.

When Jenette, my yoga instructor, described the evening I knew I wanted to be there.

It was held at the home of one of the women in our Yin Yoga class.  She said it was something she wanted to do since she moved into her house.

I could see why.

There were about ten of us.  We set up our mats in a half moon with Jenette at the center.  The hill/mountain overlooked trees and more trees.  As the sun set to our right, the moon rose to our left.

An overcast evening, the moon was just a smudge at first.  The darker it got the more the moon glowed lighting up the clouds around it.

I’ve never done yoga outside, and this seemed the perfect introduction.

For the first time ever, I  kept my eyes open, looking at the sky, for Shavasana.   Also called the corpse pose, it’s the last pose of the class where we get to lay flat on our backs, resting, in awareness (if you don’t fall asleep)  for a few minutes.

What happened high on that hill, twisting my body in familiar ways that release tension and make me feel like this is what my body was born to do?

The combination of being in nature with the moon and fire worked its magic.

I felt connected to the sky and the earth at the same time. I felt safe and certain within myself. A calm washed over me and even when we finished doing yoga and there I was with ten people I only barely knew or didn’t know at all, I felt at ease.  Comfortable in the dark with the fire, and within myself.

When Jenette asked who wanted a S’more, I took the look stick and poked a marshmallow on the end of it.  When it was soft, I squeezed it between two graham crackers with a piece of chocolate and took a bite.   My first S’more.  It wasn’t, surprisingly,  as sweet as I thought it would be and was more tasty too.

It felt like a celebration.

Maybe I’ll have to bring some yoga or at least S’mores to out next Solstice BonFire.

  1. Maria what a beautiful evening – you are so fortunate you could see the moon. It was rain and wind here all night long.

  2. Your description of feeling connected to both the earth and sky during Shavasana was so moving, and bringing that serene energy to your next Solstice Bonfire sounds like a wonderful idea, Maria
