One of the stories in Jon’s Book The New Work of Dogs was about an older man who lived by himself with a small dog. At one point he tells Jon how the dog isn’t allowed on the couch, but when the dog goes on the couch, the man didn’t tell him to get off of it.
I loved that story and thought it said so much about how we train our dogs to do what we want them to do, but not necessarily what we say we want them to do.
We have rules like this in our house too. And it seems with each dog a rule or two gets broken.
