They come from the soft winter colors that I see, even when I’m sewing, out of the corner of my eye through my studio window. They have the feeling of this winter, not much snow, but gentle light and hazy skies, the thinning stalks of wildflowers in the pasture and tall, pale, papery grasses in the marsh.
Jan wrote to me after I made them and told me the geometric patterned fabric, that inspired these potholders, came from her mother’s skirt. How glad she’d be to know they were being used after she saved them for all those years.
Half of the Potholders come from living on a farm with animals. Companions in my life though they occupy such a different space than my own. The other half are abstract but speak to the same story.
I’m naming these Potholders Farmer’s Skirt Potholders. We tend to think of farmers as men, but, of course, many farmers throughout history have worn skirts.
There is also a “Holly Hobby” feel to these. They remind me of the Holly Hobby doll I had when I was a kid. And now it’s the updated Holly Hobby fifty years later. No longer the farm girl, now the farmer.
My Farmer’s Skirt Potholders are $25 each + $5 shipping for one or more. You can see them up close and buy them in my Etsy Shop, just click here.
Perfect name!
