Spring Snow

hens under the roost

A few days ago the temperature was above freezing and the ground was wet and muddy.  But today, for the first day of Spring, everything is frozen again and the hens are taking refuge from a snow shower under the chicken coop.

Snow in the Spring isn’t unusual, I can remember when I was a kid living on Long Island putting  plastic containers over the few crocuses that sprouted in our yard to protect them from the snow.

It’s a little disappointing, snow on the first day of Spring, but we have daffodils in our windows and  those few warm days were enough to keep me going for a while.  And the snow is actually pretty.  Tiny little flurries,  a lot like the first snow falls of the season, framing the winter.
