Suzy’s Shawl, “September Sun” Is Sold… Watch A Video of Suzy Spinning Her Yarn And Her Corgi Finn

Suzy’s shawl, September Sun  23″x 75″ .  It is  sold. $175 + $15 shipping you can buy it here.

The sun was shining at Suzy’s house, but it was a gray rainy day here on the farm.

The sunshine came when Suzy sent me a photo of her latest Shawl.   I named it September Sun (with Suzy’s blessing)  because, with all that yummy yellow,  it brought brightness and warmth to my day.

Before I write about it more,  I want to show you the video Suzy sent me of her hand spinning her yarn.  In it, her corgi Finn makes an appearance.  He’s spinning too,  the way a dog might….

Selling Suzy Fatzinger’s  Shawls has become a tradition on my blog this time of year.

She creates them all winter, spring, and summer, first hand spinning the mohair from her goats into yarn (as you can see in the video), then hand knitting them.

Each is a unique combination of color and pattern.  Each one, a wearable piece of art.

I love how one end of September Sun is yellow and the other gray.  I’m also taken with the white locks spun into the yellow yarn.   It’s just the kind of thing that makes Suzy’s shawls even more special.

Suzy washes her shawls in a natural solution which makes them even softer than the natural mohair already is.

September Sun is 23″x 75″ long.    It is $175 + $15 shipping.   You can buy it in my Etsy Shop, just click here.  Or you can email me at [email protected]  I take checks, PayPal, and Venmo.

Most of the yarn Suzy spins comes from her goats, April, Alice, Lucy, and Ruth.  She also gets some of the roving that she spins into yarn from other fiber artists that she’s been working with for years.

Below is a photo of Suzy’s goats in their full mohair coats.

Suzy’s “Marigold Shawl” Is Sold

Suzy Fatzinger’s  Marigold Shawl is 19″x70″  it is $175 + $15 shipping. You can buy it here.

My first thought when I saw Suzy’s new shawl was elegant and earthy.

Then marigolds came to mind.  Especially this time of year when the other flowers are starting to fade, the marigolds, just get richer, and deeper.  Their opaque petals seem strengthened by cool air.

It’s hard to look at Suzy’s photo, and not imagine sitting on one of the yellow rockers wrapped in her shawl.  In my mind, I have a cup of tea and am watching the birds.

We do this every fall, Suzy Fatzinger and I.

She sends me photos of the shawls she made all year long and I put them up on my blog looking for the right person to buy them.  And it works.  There is always a person that belongs to each of Suzy’s shawls.

The first Shawl I posted last month, just announcing I’d be selling her shawls soon,  was sold before I even offered it for sale.   But that’s not unusual.  Suzy’s shawls sell quickly.

If you don’t remember from past years, or you’re new to my blog,  Suzy hand spins and hand knits her shawls.

No two shawls are alike, each is a unique piece of wearable art.

Suzy’s shawls are made from the mohair from her angora goats, April, Alice, Ruth, and Lucy.   Some natural and some dyed.  She also uses wool from her favorite fiber artists.  One who is the breeder of her goats.

Suzy’s hand washes her shawls in a natural solution, so they are extra soft.

Marigold Shawl is 19″x 70″ and it is $175 + $15 shipping.  You can buy it in my Etsy Shop.  Just click here.  Or you can email me at [email protected].  I take checks, PayPal and Venmo.

I can’t tell them apart, but here are Suzy’s angora goats, April, Alice, Ruth and Lucy.  All with smiles on their faces.

“The Painted Shawl”, Suzy’s New Shawl is Sold

The Painted Shawl is 19 1/2″x63″. It is $160 + $10 shipping. Is sold You can buy it here.

“The colors are like a memory, but I can’t say of what.  Maybe it’s feeling not a thing” I texted Suzy when she sent me a photo of her new shawl.  “Yes, it almost hums, the yellow.” She wrote back.

That strip of reds, pinks and warm gray is the color of oak leaves when they turn in the fall.  And the black stripe is Issachar’s wool.  Suzy had the yellow wool dyed this year.  It comes from her angora goats, Annie, Alice, Ruth and Lucy.

The bold accents pulled me in, but the more I look at it, the more colors I see. They are subtly spun and knit together.  The colors are blended like paint mixed on a pallet.  I marvel at the nuance of them.  The shawl looks more painted than knit.

The Painted Shawl is as grand as a landscape and as intimate as a single leaf.

Each of Suzy’s shawls is a unique creation.  She washes them in a natural solution so they are extra soft.  They are made mostly of the mohair from her own goats, but she also adds llama fiber and in this shawl, wool from my sheep, Issachar who is a mix of Cormo, Romney, and Blueface Leicester.

Suzy’s Painted Shawl is 19 1/2″x 63″ and is $160 + $10 shipping. It is sold. You can buy it in my Etsy Shop, just click here or you can email me at [email protected]. I take checks, PayPal and Venmo.

Suzy’s Shawl “Early Winter Sun” Is Sold

Suzy Fatzinger’s  Shawl “Early Winter Sun” is Sold 20″x63″ and is $160 + $10 shipping .  You can buy it here.

The first thing I felt when I saw Suzy’s new shawl Early Winter Sun was a deep warmth.  Like the kind of sun in the winter that makes all the difference.  For me, it’s the pines and ferns that stay green all year even when there’s snow on the ground.  It’s the sun breaking through the cloud-covered sky, sending long shafts of yellow light through the white pines and warming my face, even if just for a moment.

Creamy is another word that came to mind.

Like all of Suzy’s shawls, Early Winter Sun, is hand-spun and handknit.  Each of Suzy’s shawls is a unique creation.  This shawl is made with mohair which comes from Suzy’s angora goats, Alice, Lucy, Ruth, and April. There is also some Alpaca wool which comes from one of the fiber artists that Suzy likes to get her wool from.

Suzy also washes all her shawls in a natural solution which makes them extra soft.

Detail of Early Winter Sun

You might remember the video below that I put on my blog when Suzy was carding the wool she would later spin into yarn and knit in make Early Winter Sun.

Hand-Carding Roving For Suzy’s New Shawl

I’m currently making a little batch of hand-carded roving to add to my green and yellow shawl” Suzy texted me.

Then she sent me this video of the roving and the various carding tools with her dogs Rosie and Tony in it.

Both dogs are rescues and keep Suzy company while she works.  “Tony hates everyone, but he loves us and his dogs.”  She texted me.  Those of us who have little dogs understand how ferocious they can be.

I wanted to post this video because it shows just a bit more of the process that goes into the making one of Suzy’s shawls.

After the wool is carded, it still needs to be spun and then knit. I love how shimmery the green roving is.

I can’t wait to see how Suzy uses it.

Suzy’s Shawl “Wild Aster” Is Sold

Wild Aster is 21″x 68″ and is $160 + $10 shipping It is sold. . You can buy it here.

I was having breakfast across the dining room table from Jon when I got Suzy’s text with the photo of her latest shawl.

As I looked at the shawl an image of the purple asters that grow wild in the back pasture came into my head.  The flowers have some a deeper purple, but are also softer, bordering on periwinkle and a very warm gray.  So much like the colors of Suzy’s new shawl.

Wild Aster

Suzy spun some pink and periwinkle roving in with the purple mohair from her angora goats. The pink and purple come from her friend Laura, who Suzy gets her goats from. The white locks spun into the white mohair (The textured white, which you can see in the photo above)come from my whether Liam.

I thought it a lovely combination of people and animals.

Wild Aster, like all of Suzy’s shawls, is unique in its mix of hand-spun yarns and patterns.  And she washes them in a natural solution to soften them even more than they already are.

Suzy’s Shawl Wild Aster is 21″x68″ and is $160 + $10 shipping.  It is sold. You can buy it in my Etsy Shop.  Just click here. Or you can email me at [email protected]. I take checks, PayPal and Venmo.

Suzy’s” Woodland Shawl” for Sale

Woodland Shawl is 59″x 19″ and is $150 + $10 shipping. You can buy it here.

“Warm and woodsy is what comes to mind” I wrote the other day when Suzy described the colors she was using in her new shawl.

Yesterday she sent me a picture of that shawl all done and I thought I was right. It feels to me like walking in the winter woods.

Take a close look and you’ll see the subtle shift of color in the  natural variations of browns and grays above the snowy white.  Then there’s the thin strip of green, like the lacy ferns that pop up though the early snow.  Or it’s the moss that stays green all winter long, clinging to the bark of a tree.

It’s a Woods Woman’s shawl.  A way to wrap yourself in nature, no matter where you are.

Suzy  hand spins and knits her shawls from the wool of her mohair goats Lucy, Ruth,April, Alice and Larry.  She’s dedicated to detail, and also uses wool that she buys throughout the year from other farmer’s.   The light gray locks  spun into the white mohair  of Woodland Shawl, come from a Wensleydale lamb.

Suzy’s washes each shawl in a natural solution so it’s as soft and warm as it looks.

Purple Cloud, Suzy’s Mohair Shawl… Sold

Purple Cloud is 64z’x19″.  It’s $150. + $10 shipping you can buy it here.

“Purple Cloud”, it’s those little tufts of soft pale blue locks that made Suzy’s husband Joe think of clouds.  After that, I couldn’t see Suzy’s latest shawl any other way.

She also knit a string of turquoise into the purple angora wool.  This adds extra texture and makes for more subtle hues.

Washed in a natural rinse, Suzy’s angora shawl is soft and comfortable, and at the same time elegant.

The wool comes from her goats Lucy, April, Ruth, Alice and Larry.  You may want to watch the video of them she sent me, it’s pretty popular on Youtube with over a thousand views.

Suzy works on her shawls, hand spinning the wool then hand knitting them, all year long.  We’ve already sold seven or eight of them, some even before she finished them.  Suzy just finished knitting  Purple Cloud this week and I don’t think she’ll have time to make many more shawls this season.

I posted Purple Cloud in my Etsy Shop yesterday evening but didn’t have a chance to put it up on my blog before we met friends for dinner and went to see a play of Shirley Jackson’s novel “The Haunting of Hill House” at the  Old Castle Theater in Bennington Vermont.  I did email Lisa who expressed an interest in Suzy’s shawls before leaving.

When we got home Purple Cloud was sold.

Purple Cloud is 64″ x 19″.  It’s   $150.  + $10 shipping and is sold. You can buy it in my Etsy Shop, just click here.

Suzy’s Shawl, “Winter Sky” …Sold

Winter Sky is 64″x 17″ and is $150 + $10 shipping.  It is sold. You can buy it here.

Last week I wrote about Suzy’s Shawl Winter Sky and it seemed to sell quickly.  But, as sometimes happens, the sale didn’t work out.

Over the years I’ve had this happen to me many times. It’s always a disappointment when someone writes back to me and tells me they’ve changed their mind for one reason or another. But it’s all part of being an artist and putting your work out into the world. And I have come to believe, from experience, that when this happens, it’s because the piece of art was meant for someone else.

So now I get to help make that connection between Suzy’s Winter Sky Shawl and the person it was really meant for.

And what better day to sell Winter Sky than on Halloween, the day that we usher in the dark days of winter.

When Suzy told me that her shawl has the clear blue of a winter’s sky against dark clouds, I immediately thought of those very cold days when the sky is bright blue. But I also see in her shawl the gray clouds that bring the snow.

It’s the details that aren’t noticeable right away that really intrigue me about Suzy’s work.  There always seems to be a little gift.  In this one, it’s the ropy stripe that falls from the neckline and wraps around the opposite shoulder. Bulky, like a long braid, It’s a wonderful contrast to the lacy gray knit. And once you take a close look at it you see the subtle shifts in color too.

Winter Sky is 64″ long x17″.  It’s $150 + $10 shipping.  It is sold. You can buy it in my Etsy Shop. Just click here.  Or you can email me at [email protected].  I take checks, PayPal and Venmo.

All of Suzy’s Shawls are one of a kind.  They are made with the wool from her Angora goats which she hand spins and hand knits.  She washes them in a natural solution so they are as soft and cozy as they look.
